Undertrial Offender Absconds From STNM Hospital

An undertrial prisoner lodged in judicial custody reportedly escaped on Sunday afternoon while undergoing medical treatment at Sir Thutob Namgyal Memorial (STNM) Hospital.

The accused has been identified as Bivek Pradhan (32), son of Bikash Pradhan and a resident of Arithang, Gangtok. He is approximately 5.5 feet tall, of medium build, with a fair complexion and black hair. He bears a mole on the right side of his nose and has tattoos on both hands, legs, and chest. According to police sources, he is also known to be a habitual drug user and smoker.

Pradhan was initially arrested in connection with Sadar Police Station Case No. 19/2026 dated January 31, 2026, registered under Sections 303, 305(a), and 331(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. He was subsequently remanded to judicial custody in relation to Sadar PS Case No. 17/2026 dated February 23, 2026, registered under Section 262 of the BNS, 2023.

On February 23, while receiving treatment at STNM Hospital, Soccheythang, he allegedly managed to escape from custody.

Police have launched a search operation to trace and apprehend the absconding accused. Members of the public have been requested to immediately inform Sadar Police Station, Gangtok, if they have any information regarding his whereabouts.
