After 37 years in prison, 72-year-old Saibanna N Natikar, India's longest-serving prisoner, has finally been released from Karnataka's Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.
He was convicted for murdering both of his wives due to suspected infidelity. Saibanna was originally sentenced to death, but the Karnataka High Court changed it to life imprisonment. He was released after the court determined his nearly decade-long solitary confinement was illegal, along with the long delays in deciding his mercy petition.
Now frail and grey-haired, he stepped out showing little remorse and continued to justify his crimes. His freedom has sparked a national debate about where to draw the line between prison rights and the seriousness of the crime.
