Body of Kerala Geologist Killed in Sikkim Tunnel Tragedy Reaches Home; Funeral to Be Held Today

Kottayam, July 25: The mortal remains of 43-year-old geologist Anish Mohan, who lost his life in the tragic tunnel collapse at the NHPC Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project in South Sikkim, reached his hometown in Kerala on Saturday. His funeral will be held later in the day at his residence in Pampady, Kottayam.

Anish's body arrived at Cochin International Airport on an Air India flight after being airlifted from Kolkata. The transportation was expedited with the assistance of NORKA following intervention by Kerala authorities. His family received the body at the airport before it was taken to Pampady by ambulance.

The mortal remains had been transported by road from Sikkim to Kolkata on Friday, where they were embalmed before being flown to Kochi. Family members, relatives, friends and well-wishers are expected to pay their last respects before the funeral rites begin at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Anish Mohan, a Senior Geologist (Remote Sensing) with NHPC, was accompanying a team of consultants and civil engineers inspecting the under-construction Head Race Tunnel (HRT) at Samardung in South Sikkim when the accident occurred on July 20.

According to NHPC, a suspected methane gas release from within the rock strata triggered an explosion inside the tunnel, filling it with dense fumes and toxic gases before trapping workers and officials. Rescue operations continued for several days under extremely hazardous conditions, including flooding, toxic gases and damage to the tunnel's oxygen supply system. Anish's body was recovered after an intensive multi-agency search operation.

His brother, Bineesh, said Anish had not originally been scheduled to enter the tunnel but had accompanied the inspection team on the day of the incident. Anish had been serving with NHPC since 2011 and had recently been transferred from Haryana to Sikkim.
