CBI Registers FIR in Disha Salian Death Case; Aaditya Thackeray, Rhea Chakraborty Among Names to Be Probed

Mumbai, September 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered an FIR in connection with the 2020 death of celebrity manager Disha Salian, opening a fresh investigation nearly six years after the incident.

The development follows an order of the Bombay High Court directing the central agency to investigate the circumstances surrounding Salian's death and record the statement of her father, Satish Salian.

According to reports on the contents of the FIR, several prominent political and film personalities have been mentioned for investigation, including Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, actors Rhea Chakraborty, Dino Morea and Sooraj Pancholi, and Rhea's brother Showik Chakraborty.

Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh and former police officer Sachin Waze are also among those whose alleged roles have been referred to in reports concerning the FIR.

Names in FIR Do Not Establish Guilt

Importantly, the inclusion or mention of individuals in the FIR does not establish that they committed any offence.

The Bombay High Court, while ordering the CBI investigation, specifically directed that no person should be treated as an accused unless sufficient material is gathered against them during the investigation.

The allegations contained in the case therefore remain allegations and will be subject to investigation by the CBI.

Serious Allegations to Be Investigated

According to reports citing the FIR, the case involves provisions concerning alleged criminal conspiracy, murder, gang rape, disappearance or destruction of evidence, giving false information to shield offenders and alleged misconduct by public servants.

The investigation is also expected to examine allegations that evidence surrounding Salian's death was suppressed, destroyed or fabricated and that a false account of the circumstances surrounding her death was propagated.

These claims have not been judicially established, and determining whether evidence supports them will now form part of the CBI investigation.

What Happened to Disha Salian?

Disha Salian, 28, who had worked as a celebrity manager and had briefly managed late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput, died on June 8, 2020, after falling from a high-rise residential building in Mumbai's Malad area.

Mumbai Police had investigated the case and concluded that there was no foul play. Salian's death occurred six days before Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020.

The circumstances surrounding the two deaths subsequently became the subject of intense public, political and media scrutiny.

Father Approached Bombay High Court

The latest development follows a petition filed by Disha's father, Satish Salian, who challenged the earlier investigation and sought a fresh probe into his daughter's death.

On September 2, the Bombay High Court directed the CBI to register an FIR, record Satish Salian's statement and investigate the matter. The court, however, made clear that individuals should not automatically be treated as accused merely because allegations had been made against them.

Satish Salian subsequently appeared before the CBI and recorded his statement as the central agency began its investigation.

With the FIR now registered, the CBI is expected to examine the available records, evidence and allegations before determining whether criminal liability can be established against any individual.
