Chinese National Rescued Alive From Upper Trishuli-1 Tunnel After 11 Days

Kathmandu, Sep 5: In a remarkable breakthrough in Nepal’s ongoing flood rescue operations, a Chinese national has been rescued alive from a tunnel at the flood-hit Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project, 11 days after the devastating Bhote Koshi River flood struck the region.

The survivor was rescued from Audit Tunnel 4 of the Upper Trishuli-1 project in Rasuwa on Saturday afternoon during a joint operation involving the Nepali Army and a South Korean disaster response team.

According to the Nepali Army, the rescue was carried out at around 1:20 pm on September 5.

The Chinese national had remained trapped following the catastrophic August 26 flood, which caused extensive destruction across Rasuwa and other areas along the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river corridor.

Following the successful operation, the rescued man was evacuated from the tunnel and taken towards the Maithili Barracks in Trishuli, Nuwakot, for further assessment and necessary assistance.

The rescue offers renewed hope as specialised teams continue searching tunnels, hydropower facilities and other disaster-hit locations for people who remain unaccounted for.

Several hydropower projects along the flood-affected corridor suffered severe damage, prompting Nepal to deploy its security forces alongside international specialist teams for complex tunnel search-and-rescue operations.

The successful rescue after 11 days underscores the continuing possibility of finding survivors even as rescue teams battle mud, debris and difficult terrain across the disaster zone.
