Daughters Attend Father's Funeral Through Video Call, Pay ₹5,100 for Last Rites
Sonipat, August 6: A heartbreaking incident from Haryana's Sonipat has sparked widespread debate on social media after three daughters attended their father's funeral through a video call instead of being physically present.
The deceased, Shivcharan Ram Ratan Gupta, a former textile trader from Mumbai, had been living in an old-age home in Sonipat for nearly one and a half years following the death of his wife. He reportedly passed away after a prolonged illness.
According to the old-age home's management, his three daughters, who live in Nepal, Uttar Pradesh, and Mumbai, were informed immediately after his death. However, none travelled to Sonipat for the funeral. Instead, they joined the cremation via video call and transferred ₹5,100 to the old-age home to perform the last rites.
The funeral was eventually conducted by the old-age home's staff and local residents. The incident has reignited conversations about changing family relationships, elderly care, and the growing isolation faced by many senior citizens in India.
