Driver’s Son to MLA : Sabarinathan’s Stunning Win in Virugambakkam
R. Sabarinathan, the son of actor-politician Vijay’s long-time aide and driver Rajendran, secured a remarkable victory from the Virugambakkam constituency in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Contesting on a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) ticket, the 30-year-old candidate defeated his rivals with a strong margin of over 27,000 votes.
His candidacy initially surprised many but soon gained widespread attention, especially after an emotional campaign video went viral, highlighting his humble background and strong grassroots connection.
Sabarinathan’s victory is being seen as a reflection of TVK’s unconventional political approach, where loyalty and ground-level work are valued over traditional political lineage.
The result also signals a broader shift in voter sentiment, with people supporting fresh faces and non-dynastic leaders, contributing to TVK’s impressive debut in the state elections.
