Fresh Landslide Disrupts Rimbi–Yuksom Road in Sikkim, Several Houses at Risk
Darjeeling: Continuous rainfall has once again triggered nature’s fury in the hills of Sikkim. A major landslide has severely disrupted the Rimbi–Yuksom road in West Sikkim, bringing vehicular movement along the route to a complete halt.
A large section of the hillside collapsed onto the road, covering the stretch with soil, rocks and heavy debris. The extensive landslide has damaged a significant portion of the road, leaving the important route completely inaccessible to vehicles.
According to local residents, the situation has become particularly concerning as several houses located near the affected hillside are now under potential threat. With the slope remaining unstable, residents fear that further landslides could occur if the rainfall continues.
Although landslides are common across Sikkim’s mountainous roads during the monsoon, the scale of the latest incident has heightened concerns among people living in the area. The Rimbi–Yuksom road is an important link for both local residents and tourists, and its closure has caused significant difficulties for commuters and visitors.
The biggest concern is that even after the initial landslide, the affected hillside may not yet be completely stable. Residents living close to the road are reportedly worried about their safety and have urged the authorities to conduct an immediate assessment of the vulnerable slope through experts and take necessary preventive measures.
Locals have also pointed out that similar problems occur every monsoon. They believe that simply clearing the debris and reopening the road will not provide a permanent solution. Long-term measures, including slope protection, hill conservation and permanent safety infrastructure, are needed to prevent repeated landslides in the area.
Authorities are currently monitoring the situation. However, until weather conditions improve and the landslide-prone section is declared safe, travel through the affected stretch is likely to remain risky.
Local residents, tourism operators and visitors are now waiting for the Rimbi–Yuksom road to be cleared and normal vehicular movement to resume.
