Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, October 2: The Indian women's hockey team scripted history on Friday, ending a 44-year wait for Asian Games gold with a thrilling 1-0 victory over defending champions China in the women's hockey final at the Asian Games 2026.
Lalremsiami emerged as India's match-winner, scoring a spectacular field goal in the 10th minute to give the team an early advantage. Despite relentless pressure from the Chinese side, India maintained its slender lead through disciplined defending and an outstanding performance by veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia, who made a crucial penalty-stroke save.
The historic triumph marks India's second women's hockey gold medal at the Asian Games, following its maiden victory in 1982. The team had previously reached the finals in 1998 and 2018 but settled for silver on both occasions.
The victory also secured India a direct qualification berth for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, adding greater significance to the achievement.
India's campaign was equally remarkable on the attacking front, with Deepika emerging as the tournament's leading goalscorer with 21 goals, followed by teammate Navneet Kaur with 10.
Led by captain Salima Tete, the Indian squad overcame higher-ranked China to reclaim continental supremacy, delivering a landmark moment for women's hockey in the country.
