India Officially Expresses Condolences as Foreign Secretary Signs Book for Ayatollah Khamenei

New Delhi, 5 March : India has formally expressed its sympathy following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the former Supreme Leader of Iran, after his passing in recent military strikes.

On March 5, 2026, India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, visited the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi to sign a condolence book on behalf of the Government of India, extending heartfelt condolences to the people and leadership of Iran during this period of mourning.

Khamenei, who had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, died in attacks attributed to foreign military action at the end of February. Misri’s gesture marked India’s first official public reaction to the news of his death and emphasized the country’s diplomatic respect and solidarity with Iran in the wake of this significant event.

The signing of the condolence book at the embassy was also accompanied by interactions between the Indian Foreign Secretary and Iranian diplomatic representatives, reinforcing ties between the two nations amid the complex geopolitical situation in the region.
