Jamui Harassment Case: Three Arrested, SIT Formed as Police Flag 32 Social Media Accounts
Jamui (Bihar), September 21 : Three suspects were arrested and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up following the alleged assault and harassment of two students who had just completed Class 10 by a group of young people in the Jamui district. The video of the incident spread quickly on social media and this caused great public anger, leading to police intervention.
The incident is said to have taken place on September 19 near Madwa Pahad, while the two students, one a boy and the other a girl, were going back after having attended coaching classes.
It has been reported that some young people stopped the students, abused them verbally and are said to have beaten and harassed them. The students were allegedly kept from leaving and were made to apologise before they were permitted to go.
Three Arrested, Special Investigation Team Constituted
The superintendent of police in Jamui, Bishwajeet Dayal, stated that the investigators had identified about seven people who are allegedly connected with the incident, three of whom have already been arrested.
It has been reported that the three suspects who were arrested are minors.
A task force headed by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Deepti Monali has been set up to look into the case and to locate the other suspects.
A case has been filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The investigators are looking at the evidence that is available in order to find out the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ascertain the role of each suspect.
Police Identify 32 Social Media Accounts
The investigation has gone beyond the alleged assault to include the way the video has been circulated online.
The police have determined that 32 social media accounts should be dealt with in relation to the distribution of the footage. This is said to involve 13 Facebook accounts, 12 Instagram accounts and seven accounts on X.
The authorities have begun taking action to have the video taken down from online platforms and have stated that it might lead to legal repercussions if material which reveals the identity of a minor victim is circulated.
The aim of the action is to stop the footage from being spread any further and to safeguard the privacy of the students in question.
Women's Commissions Seek Action
The National Commission for Women has initiated proceedings of its own accord with respect to the incident and has asked that action be taken against those responsible.
The district administration has also been asked for a detailed report by the Bihar State Women's Commission.
The case has attracted responses from political figures, including Rahul Gandhi, who has expressed worries regarding women's safety and has called for accountability.
Protecting the Minors' Identity Remains Crucial
The fact that the footage has been widely circulated has led to concerns regarding the extra harm that online exposure may cause to children who are alleged to have experienced violence or harassment.
Although the video had drawn public attention to the incident, further sharing might jeopardise the students' privacy and subject them to additional distress.
The authorities are asking social media users not to download, forward or repost the footage.
The investigation is still going on and the charges brought against the people who have been arrested have not yet been decided by way of judicial proceedings.
This case shows how important it is to take immediate action by the police, to protect children, and to handle sensitive material found on social media in a responsible manner.
