Kolkata Durga Puja Stampede: Death Toll Reportedly Rises to 19, Dozens Injured
Kolkata, October 18 : The death toll in the Kolkata Durga Puja stampede has reportedly risen to 19, with around 35 others injured following a deadly crowd surge at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata on Saturday evening.
The tragedy occurred on October 17, during Saptami celebrations, when thousands of devotees had gathered at the popular pandal. The incident took place around 7:40 PM amid heavy rainfall and overcrowding.
Initial accounts suggest that the sudden downpour prompted visitors waiting outside to move towards the pandal, creating intense crowd pressure near the entry and exit passages. Several people reportedly fell during the rush, leaving others trapped in the densely packed gathering.
Reports have also raised questions about the safety of the temporary structure, with some suggesting that a section collapsed under pressure. The precise sequence of events and the circumstances responsible for the deaths remain under investigation.
Victims were rushed to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where injured devotees received emergency treatment. Earlier reports had placed the death toll at 17, but subsequent media updates indicated that the number had increased.
Police restricted access to the pandal following the incident, while authorities began examining crowd-management arrangements and the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
The incident has raised serious concerns over public safety at heavily attended Durga Puja celebrations, particularly where narrow passages, temporary structures and sudden changes in weather can create dangerous crowd conditions.
Further details regarding the casualties and the investigation are awaited.
