MAJOR LANDSLIDE PARTIALLY BLOCKS TEESTA, CHYAKOONG RIVERS IN NORTH SIKKIM; DOWNSTREAM AREAS ALERTED
Mangan, Sep 6: A major landslide occurred during the night of September 5–6 along the newly cut Naga–Tosa Road in the Naga Forest area of North Sikkim, opposite the Theng Tunnel.
The landslide struck near the confluence of the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers, with debris partially obstructing the flow of both rivers and causing water to accumulate around the affected stretch.
According to the latest information available, the Teesta River has resumed its flow and is presently reported to be normal. The Chyakoong River, however, continues to flow only partially through the landslide-affected section.
No casualties or injuries have been reported so far. The extent of damage to property within the jurisdiction of Mangan Police Station is yet to be assessed.
Authorities have advised residents of downstream and low-lying areas to remain alert as a precaution. People have also been urged to stay away from riverbanks and avoid venturing close to the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers until the situation is confirmed to be completely safe.
Residents in vulnerable areas should continue to follow official advisories and avoid relying on unverified information as authorities monitor the situation.
