Mamata Banerjee Dismisses Exit Poll Predictions, Confident of Stronger Mandate in 2026
West Bengal Chief Minister asserts TMC will outperform projections despite opposition optimism
Kolkata, April 30: Mamata Banerjee has rejected recent exit poll projections for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, expressing confidence that her party, the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), will secure a significantly higher number of seats than predicted.
Speaking after the conclusion of polling, Banerjee downplayed the credibility of exit polls, stating that such forecasts have historically failed to capture the true mood of voters in the state. She asserted that the ruling party is poised to surpass the 226-seat mark, reinforcing her belief in a decisive public mandate.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid a wave of projections suggesting a tighter electoral contest, with some surveys indicating gains for opposition parties, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, Banerjee maintained that ground-level support remains firmly in favour of the TMC, citing welfare initiatives and grassroots outreach as key factors driving voter confidence.
She emphasized that her government’s focus on social schemes, rural development, and economic support programs has resonated with a wide cross-section of the population. According to her, these efforts have strengthened the party’s connection with voters, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions.
Political observers note that West Bengal has often defied exit poll trends in previous elections, adding an element of unpredictability to the final outcome. The state’s complex electoral dynamics—shaped by regional identity, welfare politics, and intense party competition—make it difficult to accurately forecast results.
Meanwhile, opposition leaders have expressed optimism based on the exit poll numbers, arguing that there is growing demand for political change. The BJP and other parties have pointed to high voter turnout as a sign of shifting public sentiment.
As counting day approaches, attention is now focused on whether the TMC can retain its dominance or if the opposition can translate projections into actual gains. The results are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of eastern India ahead of future national contests.
