Nepal Election : Balen Shah’s RSP Surges Ahead in Nepal Elections, Set to Form Government
Kathmandu, March 7 (10 AM Update) : The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) led by Balendra “Balen” Shah is heading toward a major victory in Nepal’s first general election since the Gen Z protest movement.
According to the Election Commission of Nepal, results from 161 out of 165 constituencies show the RSP has already secured 27 seats. The party has also achieved a clean sweep in all 10 constituencies of Kathmandu district, indicating strong support in the capital.
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress has won five seats, the Nepali Communist Party has secured two seats, and the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) has won one seat so far.
In the ongoing vote count, the RSP is currently leading in 97 additional constituencies. The Nepali Congress, Nepali Communist Party, and CPN (UML) are each leading in 10 seats, while the Shram Sanskriti Party is ahead in five seats. Other smaller parties and independent candidates are leading in two constituencies.
In one of the most closely watched contests, Balendra Shah has taken a strong lead in Jhapa-5 with 39,284 votes. His rival, four-time prime minister and CPN-UML chairman K P Sharma Oli, has so far received 10,293 votes in what has traditionally been considered his political stronghold.
Popularly known as Balen, the 35-year-old engineer-turned-politician is widely expected to become Nepal’s next prime minister if the current trend continues. His growing popularity reflects public dissatisfaction with traditional political parties and a strong demand for political change.
Nepal’s political landscape has seen frequent instability, with the country forming 14 different governments over the past 18 years.
