Nipah Virus Claims Young Nurse’s Life in West Bengal
Kolkata, 13 Feb : A 25-year-old nurse passed away on Thursday after a prolonged fight against the Nipah virus at a private hospital in North 24 Parganas district, becoming the first reported fatality from the infection in West Bengal in recent years.
According to hospital officials, the nurse was one of two staff members who had contracted the virus. She had been undergoing treatment for several weeks. Although she recently tested negative for Nipah, her health failed to improve and remained in a critical state.
The other infected staff member, a male nurse, recovered and was discharged from the hospital in January.
Despite intensive medical care, the young nurse’s condition worsened over time. She was admitted to the Critical Care Unit (CCU) for an extended period and was placed on ventilator support a day before her death as doctors attempted to stabilize her deteriorating health.
