Pregnant Woman Allegedly Assaulted Aboard Sikkim Mahananda Express, Accused Arrested
A 20-year-old pregnant tribal woman was allegedly sexually assaulted inside the specially abled coach of the 15484 Sikkim Mahananda Express on the night of August 6 while travelling from Old Delhi Junction towards Alipurduar.
According to police, the woman, who is from Kalchini in Alipurduar district, was around two months pregnant. The alleged incident occurred after the train crossed Hasimara, when the coach was reportedly sparsely occupied.
Railway staff in a neighbouring coach allegedly heard the woman’s cries and alerted authorities through the Rail Madad helpline. The woman also informed her husband, who reached Alipurduar Junction before the train arrived.
After the train reached the station, GRP and RPF personnel attended to the woman and detained the accused. Police identified him as 30-year-old Gautam Mahato, a resident of Rangia in Assam, who had reportedly boarded the train at Siliguri Junction.
Following the woman’s complaint, police registered a case and arrested Mahato. He was subsequently produced before a court, which remanded him to five days of police custody.
The woman was taken to Alipurduar Railway Hospital for medical attention and was reported to be in stable condition. Further investigation into the case is underway.
