Raghav Chadha Stripped of Key Rajya Sabha Role Amid Growing Distance
New Delhi, April 2 : The Aam Aadmi Party is clearly tightening its ship, and the latest casualty of this internal recalibration is none other than Raghav Chadha. In a major shakeup, AAP has formally requested the Rajya Sabha Secretariat to drop Chadha from his position as the party's deputy leader in the Upper House. Stepping into his shoes will be fellow MP Ashok Mittal.
What is behind the reshuffle? If you ask insiders, this was not a sudden move but rather a slow unravelling. Over the past few months, the dynamic young leader seems to have drifted away from the party's core brass. While nobody is pointing fingers at any specific anti-party rebellion, the writing was on the wall. Chadha has been noticeably absent during make-or-break moments for the party. A glaring example was his no-show during AAP's massive public gathering in late February, which celebrated the discharge of heavyweights Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia from the excise policy probe.
The signs of a freeze-out were already out in the open. Despite having two years left in his Rajya Sabha term, Chadha was conspicuously left off the party roster of star campaigners for the current assembly elections spread across five states and a union territory.
Interestingly, the party leadership is playing it smart. Rather than handing him a formal suspension, which could easily spin into a sympathy narrative and crown him a political martyr, they are simply letting him continue his tenure as a regular MP among their ten representatives in the Upper House.
Adding a strange twist to the timing, this demotion comes just days after Chadha took to social media to praise a budget-friendly cafe at the Mumbai airport. While sipping a ten-rupee cup of tea in NDA-governed Maharashtra, he lauded the cafe's affordability and service. It was a harmless post that now sits awkwardly against the backdrop of his shifting political fortunes back in Delhi.
