Sikkim Mahananda Express Derails Near Ara in Bihar; No Injuries Reported
Ara, Sep 6: Two coaches of the Delhi-bound Sikkim Mahananda Express derailed near Ara Junction in Bihar early Sunday morning, disrupting rail traffic for several hours. No passengers or railway personnel were injured in the incident.
The incident involved Train No. 15483, the Alipurduar Junction–Delhi Sikkim Mahananda Express, and occurred at around 4 am shortly after the train started from Ara Junction, which falls under the Danapur Division of East Central Railway.
According to railway officials, the train was moving at a low speed when wheels of two coaches went off the tracks. The low speed helped prevent injuries or a potentially more serious accident.
Preliminary Probe Points to Signal Overshoot
East Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Saraswati Chandra said a preliminary investigation indicated that the loco pilot had allegedly overshot a red signal.
After reportedly realising that the signal was not meant for the train, the locomotive was moved backwards towards the loop line, following which wheels of the coaches derailed.
Railway authorities have, however, ordered a detailed inquiry to establish the exact sequence of events and circumstances that led to the derailment.
Restoration Work Completed
Railway officials and technical teams reached the site soon after the incident and began restoration operations.
Movement on the affected line was disrupted while railway personnel worked to clear the track and attend to the derailed coaches. The train eventually resumed its journey towards Delhi at around 7:23 am after the necessary procedures were completed.
The down line was reportedly not affected by the derailment.
No Casualties Reported
All passengers were reported safe, with no fatalities or injuries recorded in the incident.
The derailment initially caused concern among passengers, many of whom were asleep when they reportedly felt a sudden jolt as the train came to a halt.
Further action is expected to be based on the findings of the detailed railway inquiry.
