Supreme Court Makes Judges' Asset Declarations and Appointment Procedures Public to Bolster Transparency

New Delhi, May 6 — In a landmark move to strengthen transparency within the Indian Judiciary, the Supreme Court has publicly released the statements of assets of its judges. The disclosures were uploaded to the court's official website following a unanimous decision by the full court dated April 1, 2025.

A statement issued by the apex court noted, “The full court of the Supreme Court of India has decided that the statements of assets of the judges of this court shall be placed in the public domain by uploading the same on the website of this court. Statements of assets already received are being uploaded, and those pending will be added upon receipt.”

This initiative comes amid rising public calls for greater accountability from the judicial system, which has often been viewed as opaque in its internal functioning. The move is aimed at restoring public trust and affirming the integrity of the judiciary.

In addition to asset disclosures, the Supreme Court has also released detailed information on the judicial appointment process. This includes the functions of the High Court Collegium, the involvement of state governments, the role of the Union Government, and the final recommendations by the Supreme Court Collegium — all key players in the elevation and appointment of judges to the High Courts and the Supreme Court.

This development follows closely on the heels of a recent controversy involving High Court Justice Yashwant Varma, where large amounts of burnt currency were allegedly discovered at his residence, prompting national debate on judicial accountability.
