₹25,000 Crore Boost for Hill States Under SASCI; Sikkim Secures ₹820 Crore Allocation

The Government of India has announced a significant financial package of ₹25,000 crore under Part–X of the “Pride of Hills: Special Development Assistance for the Hill States” initiative for 2026–27. The scheme aims to address the unique developmental and financial challenges faced by India’s hill states.

Focus on Hill States’ Challenges

According to the official document, hill states continue to struggle with difficult terrain, poor accessibility, low population density, and limited revenue-generating capacity. These factors make them more dependent on central assistance. Additionally, many of these states face weaker fiscal indicators, including high debt-to-GSDP ratios and lower own tax revenue.

To accelerate development, the Centre has emphasized increased capital investment and additional financial support to help states manage existing liabilities.

Sikkim Gets Targeted Support

Among the allocations, Sikkim has been earmarked ₹820 crore, reflecting continued central support for infrastructure and development in the Himalayan state. While smaller in comparison to some larger hill states, the allocation is expected to play a crucial role in boosting connectivity, public services, and economic growth in Sikkim.

State-wise Allocation Highlights

Arunachal Pradesh: ₹4,900 crore
Himachal Pradesh: ₹3,920 crore
Nagaland: ₹3,880 crore
Uttarakhand: ₹3,460 crore
Tripura: ₹3,450 crore
Manipur: ₹2,400 crore
Meghalaya: ₹2,070 crore
Sikkim: ₹820 crore
Mizoram: ₹100 crore

Driving Inclusive Growth

The additional outlay under SASCI is over and above regular allocations, signaling the Centre’s intent to fast-track development in geographically challenging regions. For Sikkim, this funding is expected to support priority sectors such as infrastructure, sustainability, and regional connectivity.

The initiative reinforces the government’s broader goal of ensuring balanced regional development while addressing the specific needs of India’s hill states.
