WhatsApp, Telegram May Stop Working Without Registered SIM From January 1, 2027
New Delhi, October 23: Millions of WhatsApp and Telegram users across India could face restrictions from January 1, 2027, as the Central Government prepares to enforce mandatory SIM-binding requirements for messaging applications.
Under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) guidelines, messaging platforms must ensure that users' accounts remain linked to the active SIM cards associated with their registered mobile numbers.
The new requirements could prevent users from accessing WhatsApp, Telegram and other covered messaging services if their registered SIM cards are removed, replaced or deactivated. The compliance deadline for service providers is December 31, 2026.
What Will Change for Users?
Currently, messaging applications can continue functioning over Wi-Fi even after the registered SIM card is removed from a smartphone.
Under the SIM-binding system, the registered SIM must remain active and available in the device. Users operating messaging accounts on phones without their registered SIM cards could experience interruptions.
People who frequently change phones, use multiple devices or access messaging services through Wi-Fi-only devices may also be affected. However, the precise restrictions will depend on how individual platforms implement the requirements.
Government Targets Cyber Fraud
The government introduced the SIM-binding directive to tackle cybercrime, particularly phishing, impersonation, fraudulent investment schemes and so-called digital arrest scams.
According to the DoT, messaging accounts that remain operational after their registered SIM cards are removed can be exploited by cybercriminals, including those operating from outside India.
The government believes continuous SIM verification will strengthen user traceability and reduce the misuse of Indian mobile numbers.
What About WhatsApp Web?
The government has also addressed security concerns involving web-based messaging sessions.
Although the original directive proposed mandatory logouts every six hours, the government subsequently clarified that web-session logouts would follow risk-based assessments rather than a fixed six-hour interval.
The rules are expected to take effect from January 1, 2027, although the actual experience for users will depend on implementation by the messaging platforms.
