Young Soldier from Andhra Pradesh Martyred in Cross-Border Shelling at LoC

M. Murali Naik, a 25-year-old soldier from Andhra Pradesh's Satya Sai district, was martyred in intense cross-border shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) in the early hours of Friday.

Serving with the 1851 Light Regiment, Naik succumbed to injuries sustained during a fierce exchange of gunfire while defending his post.

According to his cousin Ranjit Naik, the family was informed by a senior Army officer around 6 a.m. that Murali had sustained critical injuries between 3:00 and 3:30 a.m. during a heavy exchange of fire and died during evacuation efforts. “He was brave, fighting till the last moment,” said the cousin.

The son of daily-wage labourers, Mudavath Sriram and Jyothibai, Murali had joined the Indian Army in December 2022. After years of hardship working in Mumbai's construction sector, his parents returned to their native village upon Murali’s enlistment—their only son had fulfilled his dream of donning the Army uniform.

Murali had last visited home on January 6 during a brief 15-day leave. His cousin recalled two recent calls—on May 6 and the night before his death—where Murali expressed concern over escalating firing from across the border and was unusually anxious about his parents' well-being. “He sounded different, more worried than usual,” said Ranjit.

Educated at Vigyan High School in Somandepalli, Murali had long aspired to serve in the Army. His father described him as cheerful, committed, and proud to wear the uniform. “He loved the Army and serving the nation gave him a deep sense of pride.”

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu personally reached out to the bereaved family, extending condolences and assuring full state support. “The nation will forever honour his sacrifice,” he stated, encouraging the family to remain strong.

Former CM and YSR Congress Party President Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed condolences. Meanwhile, a large number of locals gathered at Murali’s residence to pay their respects and stand in solidarity with the grieving family.
