After Post Malone’s Guwahati Debut, Assam Eyes Shakira to Boost Global Concert Scene
Guwahati, Dec 9 : Riding high on the success of American rapper Post Malone’s electrifying concert in Guwahati, the Assam government is now setting its sights on attracting even bigger international music icons to the state. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday revealed that efforts are underway to bring global pop sensation Shakira to perform in the Northeast.
Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said he has already begun initiating discussions to invite the Colombian superstar, adding that her performance could give a major push to Assam’s growing live-concert economy. He emphasized that hosting a global name like Shakira would not only elevate the state’s entertainment profile but also significantly promote tourism.
“A Shakira concert in Assam would energise our concert economy, draw international attention, and showcase the cultural vibrancy of the Northeast,” Sarma stated.
The government’s vision extends beyond Guwahati, with plans to host international shows in other prominent cities such as Dibrugarh and Silchar. The move is part of a broader cultural tourism strategy aimed at positioning Assam as a key destination for large-scale global entertainment events.
This renewed push follows the introduction of Assam’s Concert Tourism Policy in May, which offers support measures like viability gap funding, faster clearances, and simplified permissions to event organisers.
Post Malone’s performance, held on Sunday, marked one of the first major international concerts under this policy and is already being seen as a turning point for Assam’s ambition to emerge as a new hub for global live music in India’s Northeast.
