Gangtok, October 1 : Indian pilot Smit Machchhar found himself in a situation that no commercial pilot would ever want to face, the aircraft suddenly plunging through the sky while he was some thousands of feet above the ground and blood was flowing from stab wounds.
On that terrifying occasion during the flight of flydubai Flight FZ1073, his actions managed to turn what could have been an aviation disaster into an amazing tale of survival.
On September 30 the flight, which was going from Dubai to Tel Aviv, saw a violent altercation break out in the cockpit. As reported by Israeli authorities and international media, Machchhar was allegedly stabbed by his co-pilot, who is said to have been from Oman, and then tried to take control of the aircraft.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8, which was carrying 174 passengers, suddenly descended by nearly 14,000 feet within about 30 seconds as the struggle progressed.
Machchhar kept on resisting although he was seriously wounded.
One of his most important actions is said to have taken place while he was injured in the cockpit, when he succeeded in unlocking the cockpit door so that the passengers and crew outside could get involved.
That decision changed everything.
Passengers ran into the cockpit and helped to subdue the supposed attacker, after which the other flydubai pilots who were on the aircraft were able to take part in securing the plane and getting the emergency under control.
The plane was sent to Tabuk in north-western Saudi Arabia and there it landed safely.
Machchhar was sent to the hospital to receive treatment, and the Saudi authorities held the man alleged to have carried out the attack. The motive in the incident is still being investigated.
The Indian captain has attracted international attention as a result of the episode.
Benjamin Netanyahu, who is the Israeli Prime Minister, publicly called Machchhar a "true hero" and credited him with having helped to save the lives of the 174 people on board.
Machchhar is a pilot with extensive experience in the Boeing 737 and has accumulated more than 9,750 flying hours in his professional record. He became a captain with flydubai in 2022 having before that been employed by SpiceJet, where he had held the positions of senior commander and training captain.
However, on September 30th it was not just his flying experience that was put to the test.
Wounded, and with an attacker allegedly present and the aircraft rapidly losing altitude, Machchhar stayed in the fight long enough to give others a chance to take action.
The passengers and other members of the crew also showed great courage by going into the cockpit, defeating the supposed attacker and assisting in getting the aircraft under control again.
It was a joint struggle for survival, but the determination shown by Captain Smit Machchhar despite being seriously wounded became one of the key moments of the whole experience.
A flight which might have ended in tragedy instead managed to land safely.
The story was told by 174 passengers.
