Big Relief for Rural LPG Users: Cylinder Refill Booking Gap Cut From 45 to 25 Days
New Delhi, September 7: In a major relief for domestic LPG consumers in rural India, the Centre has reduced the minimum refill booking interval from 45 days to 25 days, bringing rural households on par with consumers in urban areas.
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi announced the decision on Monday, saying oil marketing companies have been directed to implement the revised booking interval with immediate effect.
Under the earlier arrangement, domestic LPG consumers in urban areas could book a refill after 25 days, while those in rural areas had to wait 45 days. The longer interval had been introduced as a temporary demand-management measure amid pressure on LPG supplies.
The government has now decided to remove the rural-urban distinction following an improvement in LPG availability and a significant reduction in pending refill orders.
According to the Petroleum Ministry's communication to state-owned oil marketing companies, a uniform 25-day interval will now apply to domestic LPG consumers in both urban and rural areas.
The directive has been issued to Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) for immediate implementation.
The earlier restrictions were introduced amid supply pressures linked to disruptions caused by the conflict in the Middle East. In March 2026, the Petroleum Ministry had officially clarified that the prevailing refill intervals were 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas, irrespective of the type of domestic connection.
With the latest revision, rural consumers will no longer have to wait an additional 20 days compared with their urban counterparts to become eligible for another domestic LPG refill booking.
