Divine Arrival: World's Largest Shiva Lingam Reaches Bihar After 2,500-Kilometer Odyssey
TST Report , 6 Jan [Gopalganj Bihar] : In a monumental fusion of faith and engineering, the world’s largest Shiva Lingam has officially crossed into Bihar. The massive monolithic structure, weighing a staggering 210 tonnes and standing 33 feet tall, arrived in Gopalganj this past Saturday, drawing thousands of devotees who lined the highways to catch a glimpse of the divine marvel.
A Decade of Craftsmanship
Carved from a single block of premium black "diamond" granite, the Lingam is the result of nearly 10 years of meticulous labor by master artisans in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu. Originally a 300-tonne raw stone, it was expertly sculpted to its current dimensions of 33 feet in both height and circumference. The base of the structure is uniquely engraved with 1,008 miniature Sahastralingams, making it a rare spiritual icon.
The 45-Day Journey of Faith
Transporting the 210-tonne monolith was an unprecedented logistical feat. A specially designed 96-wheel hydraulic trailer carried the Lingam over 2,500 kilometers, traversing through Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
The journey, which began on November 21, took 45 days to reach the Bihar border. However, the final leg of the trip currently faces a challenge at the Dumaria Bridge over the Gandak River. Authorities are assessing the bridge’s load-bearing capacity, as the combined weight of the vehicle and the Lingam is approximately 370 tonnes.
Installation and the Virat Ramayan Mandir
The Lingam is destined for the Virat Ramayan Mandir in Kaithwalia, East Champaran—a project envisioned by the late Acharya Kishore Kunal of the Mahavir Mandir Trust. Once completed in 2030, this temple complex aims to be the largest Hindu shrine in the world, surpassing Cambodia’s Angkor Wat.
The formal installation is scheduled for January 17, 2026. The ceremony will feature:
* Abhishek: Ritual bathing using sacred water from five holy sources, including Kailash Mansarovar, Gangotri, and Haridwar.
* Vedic Chants: Prayers led by renowned scholars.
* Aerial Tribute: A planned shower of flower petals from helicopters to mark the historic consecration.
