Nepal Flash Flood Leaves Nearly 400 Tourists Missing Near China Border, Death Toll Rises
Kathmandu, Aug 26 : A catastrophic flash flood struck the Bhote Koshi valley along the Nepal-China border on August 26, 2026, leaving hundreds feared dead and missing. Authorities say an earthquake-triggered landslide blocked the Bhote Koshi River, unleashing a massive surge of water and debris downstream into Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts.
The Nepal Tourism Board reported 384 travelers missing, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali citizens, based on preliminary records from travel agencies. Confirmed deaths range between 9 and 31 across various reports, with officials warning the toll is likely to climb as verification continues.
The flood swept away homes, roads, bridges, and hydropower infrastructure, with the Nepal Electricity Authority confirming damage to around 430 megawatts of generation capacity. Videos showed torrents of muddy water crashing through Trishuli Bazar, submerging houses and vehicles.
The Nepal Army has deployed helicopters and rescue teams, winching stranded residents from rooftops. President Ramachandra Paudel expressed condolences and urged intensified relief operations, while local authorities have asked residents near the riverbanks to move to higher ground immediately.
This remains a developing crisis, with cross-border coordination between Nepal and Tibet (China) underway as both sides report casualties and damage.
