Former Panihati Municipality Chairman Somnath Dey Arrested in RG Kar Cremation Case
Kolkata, Sep 3: West Bengal Police have arrested former Panihati Municipality chairman Somnath Dey from Bengaluru in connection with a fresh investigation into allegations surrounding the hurried cremation of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024.
Dey was arrested on Thursday after an interstate search by police. According to police sources, he had allegedly kept his mobile phone switched off and changed locations while investigators were trying to trace him.
Police reportedly received information that Dey had travelled to Hyderabad, prompting a team to reach the city. However, he had allegedly moved to Bengaluru by the time investigators arrived.
Following his arrest, Dey is expected to be brought back to West Bengal on transit remand. Police are expected to produce him before a Barrackpore court and seek his custody for further questioning.
The arrest is linked to a fresh FIR registered following a complaint by the RG Kar victim’s father over the circumstances surrounding his daughter’s cremation.
The family has alleged that the victim’s body was taken for cremation in Panihati in undue haste and against their wishes. They have raised questions over whether established procedures were followed and have sought an investigation into the role of those allegedly involved in arranging the cremation.
Apart from Dey, former Trinamool Congress MLA Nirmal Ghosh and Sanjeev Mukherjee, a neighbour of the victim’s family, were also named in connection with the case. Police have already arrested the other accused as part of the investigation.
The fresh investigation focuses specifically on the circumstances surrounding the cremation and is separate from the investigation into the rape and murder of the junior doctor.
The victim’s body was discovered inside a seminar room at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. The case triggered widespread protests and demands for justice across India.
Investigators are now expected to question Dey about the events leading up to the cremation and the decisions allegedly taken at the crematorium.
Further investigation is underway.
