From Security Guard to Software Engineer: The Inspiring Journey of Abdul Alim at Zoho

In 2013, Abdul Alim left his hometown with just ₹1,000 in his pocket, seeking any job that could help him survive. His journey led him to Zoho Corporation, a leading Chennai-based IT company — not as a tech professional, but as a security guard.
Yet, while guarding the gates, Alim found himself drawn to what happened inside those office walls — the fascinating world of software development. His curiosity soon turned into determination.

One day, Shibhu Alexis, a Zoho engineer, noticed Alim’s interest and encouraged him to learn coding. With his guidance and Alim’s unwavering commitment, he began teaching himself basic programming, despite having no college degree or formal education in computer science.

Within just eight months, Alim created a simple app that impressed both his mentor and Zoho’s management. His talent didn’t go unnoticed. Zoho, known for valuing skills over degrees, offered him a chance to prove himself. He cleared the interview and transitioned from guarding offices to building software inside them.
Today, after eight transformative years, Abdul Alim proudly works as a Software Engineer at Zoho. His journey is a testament to how curiosity, persistence, and opportunity can change a life.
Alim credits his success to his mentor and Zoho’s inclusive work culture that believes real talent has no boundaries. His story stands as a shining example that learning is never late, and it’s never too early — or too humble a beginning — to chase your dreams.
No degree, no limits — only determination.
