A state-level tennis player was shot dead in Gurugram on Thursday in a shocking act of violence allegedly committed by her father, who objected to her professional pursuits.

According to police, 25-year-old Radhika Yadav was in the kitchen of their Sector 57 residence in Sushant Lok when her father, Deepak Yadav, fired multiple rounds at her using his licensed .32 bore revolver. Three bullets struck Radhika, causing fatal injuries.

Deepak Yadav, 49, was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Gurugram Police Public Relations Officer Sandeep Kumar confirmed the arrest, stating that a case of murder has been registered.

Preliminary investigation suggests the shooting was the culmination of escalating tensions within the family. Officials said Deepak strongly opposed Radhika’s decision to continue managing her tennis academy, which she had established alongside her competitive career. An argument reportedly broke out moments before the attack.

“The father was dissatisfied with her running the academy, and it became a source of frequent conflict,” Kumar explained.

The formal complaint was lodged by Deepak’s brother, Kuldeep Yadav, who occupies the ground floor of the same property. Radhika’s mother was present in the home when the shooting occurred.

Radhika Yadav was regarded as a promising athlete. Born on March 23, 2000, she earned recognition on the International Tennis Federation circuit, achieving a career-high doubles ranking of 113 in November 2024. She also ranked among the top five women’s doubles players in Haryana.

Deepak Yadav has reportedly confessed to the killing and remains in police custody pending further legal proceedings. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local sporting community, where Radhika was respected both for her talent and her commitment to coaching aspiring players.
