Manipuri Musician Fatally Assaulted in Delhi; Seven Arrested, Juvenile Apprehended
New Delhi, Sep 9: Manipuri guitarist and music teacher Chongtham Vikram Singh was allegedly beaten to de@th near his residence in southeast Delhi’s Kilokari village after objecting to a late-night disturbance. Police have arrested seven adults and apprehended a juvenile in connection with the incident.
According to reports quoting police and family members, the confrontation occurred late on Sunday, September 6. Singh had stepped outside his home and asked a group of men to stop making noise. Police said the men were allegedly drinking and creating a disturbance when an argument escalated into violence.
His son, Yaiphaba, took him to Holy Family Hospital in Okhla, where he succumbed to his injuries early Monday morning. The Indian Express reported that the hospital cited haemorrhagic shock caused by blunt-force trauma as the cause of death.
Southeast Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Vineet Kumar said senior officers had met the family and community representatives and assured them of prompt, lawful action. Further investigation was underway.
Singh was associated with Manipur’s rock music scene, playing guitar with bands including Phoenix and Eastern Dark before continuing his career as a music teacher in Delhi. He was the son of renowned Manipuri singer Chongtham Kamala.
Having moved to the capital nearly two decades ago, Singh taught music and mentored aspiring musicians. He is survived by his wife and son.
His death prompted grief among fellow musicians and members of the Northeast community. Family members, friends and student groups gathered outside Sunlight Colony police station, demanding justice and a thorough investigation.
