Heroic Army Jawan Saves Infant’s Life with Swift and Selfless Action
In a heart-stirring act of courage and humanity, an Indian Army Jawan displayed extraordinary presence of mind and compassion that saved the life of an eight-month-old baby aboard the New Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express.
Sepoy Sunil, an Ambulance Assistant posted at the 456 Field Hospital in the North-East, was returning from leave when the unexpected emergency struck. The infant, traveling with his family, suddenly developed severe breathing difficulty and became unresponsive. The baby’s mother, overcome with shock, fainted, and the family was left in panic, helpless in the absence of immediate medical aid.
Without wasting a second, Sepoy Sunil rushed to the scene. On checking, he found that the infant had no pulse or breathing. Drawing on his military medical training and quick thinking, he immediately began administering paediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Using two fingers for chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, he performed two cycles of CPR — and miraculously, the baby began to breathe again.
His timely and professional intervention transformed what could have been a tragedy into a story of hope and heroism. The Defence official later confirmed that the baby was stabilized, adding that Sepoy Sunil’s swift response “prevented a fatality in a situation where no immediate medical support was available.”
This inspiring act stands as a shining example of the Indian Army’s ethos — service before self. Even while off duty, the dedication, discipline, and humanitarian spirit of a soldier never waver.
