Himachal Bus Tragedy: 8 Killed, 10 Injured After Private Bus Crashes in Chamba
Chamba, August 8: At least eight people were killed and 10 others injured after a private passenger bus met with a devastating accident in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district on Saturday morning.
The accident occurred near Chalunj Mor in the Devikothi area along the Bairagarh-Tissa road in the remote Churah Valley. The private bus was travelling from Bairagarh towards Chamba when it reportedly lost control, overturned and fell onto a road situated below the main mountain route.
The bus had departed from Bairagarh at around 6:30 AM and met with the accident after travelling only a few kilometres. According to the latest information, 18 people were on board, including the driver and conductor.
The impact left several passengers trapped beneath the badly damaged vehicle. Local residents who heard cries for help immediately rushed to the accident site and alerted the authorities.
A large-scale rescue operation was subsequently launched involving personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Himachal Pradesh Police, Home Guards, Fire Services and Revenue Department.
Authorities confirmed that eight people lost their lives, while 10 others sustained injuries. Six of the injured were reported to be in serious condition and were referred to Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College and Hospital in Chamba for further treatment.
The accident occurred along the approximately 27-km Bairagarh-Tissa mountain road, a difficult route in Churah Valley characterised by narrow stretches and steep slopes. The road also serves as an important route for travellers heading towards the high-altitude Sach Pass.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been officially established. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the crash.
The tragedy comes amid the monsoon season in Himachal Pradesh, when mountainous roads can become particularly vulnerable due to heavy rainfall, landslides and difficult driving conditions. However, officials have not yet confirmed whether weather or road conditions directly contributed to Saturday's accident.
