India Bans Flights Over 9 Middle East Nations

New Delhi, March 20 : Flying over the Middle East just got incredibly complicated. India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has thrown up a massive stop sign for domestic airlines, directing them to completely avoid the airspace of nine distinct nations. The reason? Rapidly escalating military hostilities.

We are looking at an outright directive to skirt the skies above Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, and the UAE. Recent military strikes launched by the United States and Israel within Iranian borders have turned the region into a severe hazard zone for civilian passenger aircraft. With Iran already signaling retaliatory moves, the DGCA isn't taking any chances.

There are a couple of narrow exceptions. Carriers can still route flights over Oman and Saudi Arabia. But there is a massive catch. Planes must maintain an extreme altitude, staying strictly above 32,000 feet to distance themselves from the unpredictable friction below.

What happens if an airline absolutely must touch down at airports within the danger zone? Regulators are demanding ironclad backup plans. Operators choosing to proceed—perhaps alongside other international carriers still risking the route—face intense scrutiny. They must conduct aggressive safety risk assessments and prepare robust contingency strategies for absolute worst-case scenarios.

This sweeping advisory took effect immediately. Unless the geopolitical chessboard drastically changes, these restrictions will remain locked in place until March 28. Meanwhile, flight crews are receiving urgent NOTAMs—real-time notices to airmen—warning them of any sudden airspace shifts mid-flight.
