India Is Not A Banana Republic ... : BJP's Ravi Shankar Prasad Slams Opposition
New Delhi, October 10: Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad criticised opposition parties and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) over protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, asserting that India is not a "banana republic" and must be governed through Parliament rather than street demonstrations.
Addressing a press conference following the detention of several opposition and CJP leaders in Delhi, Prasad accused the opposition of using protests to challenge democratic institutions following electoral defeats.
He maintained that peaceful demonstrations are part of democracy but alleged that opposition parties were exploiting public protests for political purposes.
Citing the BJP-led NDA's recent by-election victories in Assam, West Bengal and Puducherry, Prasad claimed that democratic institutions had prevailed over attempts to create unrest. He also criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and questioned the unity of the INDIA bloc.
His remarks came amid police restrictions and detentions surrounding the CJP-led protest at Jantar Mantar, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning electoral processes.
