Press Club of India Condemns Alleged Police Aggression Against Journalists at Jantar Mantar

New Delhi, October 4: The Press Club of India (PCI) has condemned alleged police aggression against journalists covering protests against the Chief Election Commissioner at Jantar Mantar on October 2 and 3, raising concerns over press freedom and media safety.

In a statement issued on Sunday, PCI alleged that several journalists faced aggressive police behaviour despite displaying valid press identification, while some were reportedly detained alongside protesters.

A female journalist also accused an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) of molestation and groping. According to PCI, she spent hours at Parliament Street Police Station on Saturday night seeking registration of an FIR without immediate action.

In a subsequent development on October 4, Delhi Police acknowledged receiving sexual harassment complaints from three women journalists and reportedly transferred them to the Crime Branch at Kamla Market for inquiry.

PCI also criticised the suspension of internet services around Jantar Mantar on Friday, alleging that the restriction disrupted news reporting and the flow of information.

The organisation demanded accountability, prompt investigation and protection for journalists covering public demonstrations. The allegations remain under inquiry, with no finding of misconduct established against the officers concerned.
