Indian Scientists Develop Clean DME Technology That Could Replace LPG in the Future
Pune , March 15 : Indian researchers have made an important breakthrough in the field of clean energy by developing technology that produces Dimethyl Ether (DME), a fuel that could potentially act as an alternative to conventional Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) used in homes and industries.
DME is regarded as a cleaner fuel because it releases significantly fewer harmful emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels. Scientists believe this innovation could help India reduce its dependence on imported LPG while also supporting environmental sustainability.
Researchers involved in the project explained that DME has characteristics similar to LPG, which means it can be used in cooking gas systems with only minor adjustments. During experimental trials, blending DME with LPG showed encouraging results, including better efficiency and lower levels of air pollution.
The technology also aligns with India’s broader goal of expanding clean energy solutions. In several research initiatives, scientists are exploring methods to produce DME by converting industrial carbon dioxide emissions into fuel, effectively transforming greenhouse gases into a useful energy resource.
Besides household cooking, DME is also being studied as a possible replacement for diesel in transportation and industrial applications. Experts say the fuel burns with very low soot and particulate emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional fuels.
Energy experts believe that with further research and large-scale production, DME could play a significant role in strengthening India’s energy security. By reducing dependence on imported fuels and promoting cleaner alternatives, the technology may become a key part of the country’s transition toward a greener energy future.
However, scientists note that widespread commercial use will require proper infrastructure, regulatory approvals, and additional testing to ensure safe and efficient large-scale implementation.
