Indore Teacher's Plea for Euthanasia Echoes a Life of Pain, Purpose, and Unshakable Dedication

In a heart-wrenching and inspiring tale of strength, compassion, and resilience, a 52-year-old government school teacher from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has written to President Droupadi Murmu seeking permission for euthanasia—not out of despair, but to end the excruciating pain of a paralyzed body and give the gift of life to others through organ donation.

Chandrakanta Jethwani, a science teacher at Government Middle School in Jabran Colony, has been battling intense physical agony every day since 2020. A medical mishap during orthopedic treatment left her lower body paralyzed. Additionally, she suffers from Osteogenesis Imperfecta, a rare condition that causes bones to fracture easily, making her daily life a constant struggle.

Despite being confined to a wheelchair, Jethwani has continued teaching with unshakable spirit. “I teach my students to live with courage, so I will not take my life. But my body no longer supports me. I endure unbearable pain every day,” she wrote in her emotional plea. “If allowed, I want to donate my organs so someone else can live.”

Having no immediate family, she has already donated all her property to six underprivileged students and pledged her organs to MGM Medical College, saying they might serve a greater purpose. “For me, my organs may be useless, but if they can help someone see, breathe, or live—then they are more precious than any jewel.”

Her principal, Sakharam Prasad, commended her unwavering dedication. “She’s an incredible teacher who never let her condition affect her duty. Her courage is inspiring.”

Chandrakanta’s request has reignited conversations on end-of-life dignity, compassionate care, and the rights of those suffering from chronic pain. But more importantly, her journey stands as a shining example of how one can endure suffering while still choosing to give, teach, and inspire.
