Justice Delivered: Former MLA Amit Jogi Handed Life Sentence in 2003 High-Profile Murder Case

New Delhi, April 8 : It’s taken over two decades, but the gavel has finally come down in one of Chhattisgarh's most talked-about criminal cases. The Chhattisgarh High Court has handed a life sentence to former MLA Amit Jogi for his involvement in the sensational 2003 assassination of senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ram Avatar Jaggi.

Amit Jogi is the son of the late Ajit Jogi, who served as the state's very first Chief Minister. This landmark verdict was delivered by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Arvind Kumar Verma.

The ruling brings a sense of closure to a grueling and long-fought legal battle. The court's decision was finalized after hearing multiple arguments, which included an appeal from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and a revision petition filed by the victim’s son, Satish Jaggi, who had been pushing for an enhanced sentence.

A Look Back at the 2003 Tragedy

To understand the weight of this verdict, we have to rewind to 2003. Ram Avatar Jaggi, a prominent businessman and a heavyweight in the NCP, was gunned down in the streets of Raipur. The political climate at the time was incredibly tense, with Ajit Jogi serving as the Chief Minister of the newly formed state.

Initially, the local police brushed the assassination off as a botched robbery and quickly arrested five individuals. However, the narrative took a sharp turn after a change in leadership. When the BJP government came into power shortly after, they recognized the need for a deeper look and officially transferred the investigation over to the CBI in 2004, setting the stage for the truth to finally come to light.
