Man’s Desperate Act in Odisha Reveals Gaps in Rural Banking Awareness

In a deeply distressing incident from Odisha’s Keonjhar district, a 50-year-old daily wage worker, Jeetu Munda, took an extreme step that has shocked many and highlighted serious gaps in financial awareness and access in rural areas.

Jeetu, who belongs to a tribal community, had been struggling to withdraw ₹20,000 from his late sister Kalra’s bank account. Kalra had passed away on January 26, 2026, and for months, Jeetu made repeated visits to the Maliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank seeking access to the funds. According to reports, bank officials insisted that the account holder must be physically present to authorize the withdrawal.

Unaware of the legal procedures required after a person’s death—such as presenting a death certificate or establishing rightful claim—Jeetu resorted to a shocking act. Three months after his sister’s burial, he exhumed her remains and carried her skeleton for nearly 3 kilometers to the bank in a desperate attempt to prove her death and claim the money.

The incident has sparked widespread concern over the lack of financial literacy and support systems in remote communities. Following the incident, bank authorities acknowledged the situation and approved the release of funds to Jeetu, recognizing him as the rightful claimant.

While the money has finally been sanctioned, the episode stands as a painful reminder of how systemic gaps and lack of awareness can push vulnerable individuals into unimaginable situations.

Action

The Odisha government has taken serious note of the distressing incident involving tribal man Jeetu Munda in Kendujhar district. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC) of the Northern Division to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter. The probe aims to determine how such a situation arose and to ensure that similar incidents do not happen in the future.

The case drew widespread attention after Jeetu Munda exhumed his deceased sister’s remains and carried them to a bank while trying to withdraw money from her account. Reports suggest he had been struggling with procedural requirements for accessing the funds, which led to the extreme step.

In response, the state government has emphasized the need for administrative sensitivity and proper handling of such cases, especially involving vulnerable communities. The inquiry is expected to examine any lapses in the system and recommend corrective measures.
