Massive Drug Bust at Melli Check Post: Over 1,000 Capsules Seized, One Arrested

Melli, March 25: In a major crackdown on narcotics under the ongoing "Nasha Mukta Bharat Abhiyan" (Drug-Free India Campaign), Melli Police intercepted a significant drug haul at the Melli Check Post on Wednesday. Acting on a solid tip-off, officers seized a commercial quantity of illegal substances and arrested one suspect.

The successful checkpoint operation was led by Police Inspector (PI) Lata Bardewa, working closely under the guidance of Melli’s Station House Officer, PI Sher Bahadur Manger.

During the targeted vehicle checks, the police team pulled over a Ford Figo (registration SK01PB 5167). The driver, identified as 36-year-old Nazim Alam from Majitar, Jorethang, was detained on the spot.

To ensure complete transparency, officers conducted a thorough search of the vehicle in the presence of two independent witnesses—Ugen Ongdup Bhutia and Dambar Kr. Basnett. Gazetted Officer Dr. Siddhant Pradhan, Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services in Melli, was also present during the search.

The inspection revealed a massive stash of contraband cleverly hidden inside various compartments of the car. Police recovered 1,008 blue capsules alongside five bottles of illegal cough syrup. Due to the high volume, the seizure officially qualifies as a commercial quantity of drugs.

Authorities have booked the accused under the Sikkim Anti-Drugs Act. A full investigation is currently underway to trace the origins of the contraband and uncover any broader smuggling networks tied to the arrest.
