She finished with a combined lift of 190 kilograms, adding to the gold medals she won at the 2018 Gold Coast and 2022 Birmingham editions.
She opened her campaign with an 82kg lift in the snatch, taking a commanding lead since no other competitor lifted more than 70kg in that round. She then improved to 85kg on her final snatch attempt. In the clean and jerk, she produced a 105kg lift, well clear of the rest of the field, where no other athlete crossed 90kg at that stage. Her combined total of 190kg secured the gold comfortably.
This is Chanu's third Commonwealth Games title overall. She made her Games debut in Glasgow back in 2014, where she won silver, and returned to the same city twelve years later to add another gold to her record. She also holds an Olympic silver medal from the Tokyo Games and finished fourth at the Paris Olympics in 2024.
Earlier the same day, India opened its medal tally at these Games when Rishikanta Singh Chanambam won silver in the men's 60kg weightlifting event. He set a new Commonwealth Games snatch record with a 121kg lift, breaking the previous record of 120kg, then lifted 143kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 264kg. Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Bin Kasdan took gold with a total of 273kg, also a new Games record, while Kenya's Joshua Amunga Mboya won bronze with 260kg.
Between Chanu's gold and Rishikanta's silver, India had a strong day in weightlifting at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
