Navratri 2026 Day 5: Worship Maa Skandamata for Peace, Prosperity and Divine Blessings
Navratri 2026 Day 5: Worship Maa Skandamata for Peace, Prosperity and Divine Blessings
Navratri 2026 Day 5 is dedicated to Maa Skandamata, the fifth manifestation of Goddess Durga and the divine mother of Lord Kartikeya, also known as Skanda. Revered as a symbol of maternal love, compassion, protection and wisdom, Maa Skandamata represents the nurturing power of motherhood and the strength of divine grace.
The name Skandamata combines "Skanda," another name for Lord Kartikeya, and "Mata," meaning mother. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Kartikeya is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is regarded as the commander of the divine army.
Maa Skandamata is traditionally depicted with four arms, seated on a lion and holding her infant son, Lord Skanda, on her lap. She carries lotus flowers in two hands, supports Lord Kartikeya with another and raises her remaining hand in a gesture of blessing. Her association with the lotus also earns her the name Padmasana Devi.
The goddess symbolises unconditional love, courage, purity and spiritual enlightenment. Devotees believe that worshipping Maa Skandamata brings peace, prosperity, wisdom and protection from negative influences. She is also associated with the Vishuddha, or Throat Chakra, which represents communication, purity and spiritual expression in certain yogic traditions.
On the fifth day of Navratri, devotees offer prayers, flowers, incense, fruits and sweets to Maa Skandamata. Bananas are traditionally considered a favoured offering, while many worshippers also present yellow flowers and other devotional offerings.
The rituals generally include lighting a diya, chanting sacred mantras, performing aarti and seeking the goddess's blessings for family well-being, happiness and spiritual progress.
One of the widely recited mantras dedicated to Maa Skandamata is:
"ॐ देवी स्कन्दमातायै नमः॥"
Om Devi Skandamatayai Namah.
The fifth day of Navratri highlights the sacred bond between mother and child and encourages devotees to embrace kindness, patience, selflessness and devotion. Maa Skandamata's worship serves as a reminder that true strength is rooted in compassion, faith and the willingness to protect and nurture others.
As devotees continue their nine-day celebration of Goddess Durga, the worship of Maa Skandamata reflects the spiritual significance of maternal love and the belief that divine blessings guide individuals towards inner peace, harmony and enlightenment.
