NEET-UG 2026 Crisis Deepens as CBI Probes Alleged NTA Insider Link in Paper Leak Case
New Delhi, May 17 : India’s largest medical entrance exam is mired in controversy after investigators discovered what seems to be a nationwide paper leak network tied to the NEET-UG 2026 exam. This has led to authorities canceling the test and ordering a fresh examination for over 22 lakh students.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is now leading the inquiry. They are looking into the possible involvement of insiders linked to the National Testing Agency after court proceedings and investigative findings suggested a leak within the examination system. This has increased scrutiny of the agency that handles many of India’s major entrance exams.
The original NEET-UG exam took place on May 3 in hundreds of cities across the country. However, rising allegations about a so-called “guess paper,” which supposedly included many actual exam questions, sparked outrage among students, parents, and educators. Central agencies later determined that the integrity of the exam process had been compromised, leading to the test's cancellation.
Authorities have now set a re-examination for June 21. Officials confirmed that candidates do not need to submit new applications or pay extra fees. Revised admit cards are expected to be issued in June through official channels.
Investigators believe the suspected leak operation extended across several states, involving middlemen, contacts linked to coaching, and individuals accused of distributing leaked materials for large sums of money. Reports from the Rajasthan Police’s Special Operations Group indicated that copies of the alleged paper were sold for amounts between ₹10 lakh and ₹25 lakh.
In a recent development, the CBI arrested a Botany lecturer from Pune who reportedly worked as an expert connected to the examination process. Investigators labeled the accused as one of the key figures in the emerging network behind the leak.
The investigation has also revealed unusual details about how the alleged racket functioned. According to findings reported in the media, leaked papers were shared both digitally and through personal contacts. Some accused individuals allegedly used family members and intermediaries to distribute the material and avoid being caught.
The controversy has led to significant criticism of the testing system and reignited discussions about the NTA’s operations. Various organizations and student groups have approached the Supreme Court, calling for structural reforms and, in some cases, the complete dissolution of the agency in its current form.
Political pressure has increased on the Centre, with opposition leaders accusing authorities of failing to protect the future of millions of aspirants. Meanwhile, the Union government has begun making administrative changes within the NTA to help restore public trust in the examination process.
Students who must prepare again for this highly competitive exam are facing a heavy emotional burden. Many aspirants who dedicated years to preparing for NEET now face the difficulty of revising for a second exam while worrying about fairness and transparency.
The NEET-UG exam remains one of India’s most competitive entrance tests, serving as the pathway to undergraduate medical admissions across the country. The current controversy is seen as one of the most serious crises of exam integrity in recent years.
