Nepal Issues Stern Warning Against Use of Fake Documents for Gulf Travel via India
New Delhi/Kathmandu – The Government of Nepal has issued a strong advisory cautioning its citizens against using forged documents to travel to Gulf nations through Indian airports. The warning comes amid a rising number of detentions and interrogations by Indian immigration authorities involving Nepali nationals attempting to bypass official travel protocols.
In its latest advisory released on Monday, the Nepali Embassy in India urged job seekers heading to foreign countries—particularly in the Gulf region—to secure mandatory labour permits and No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from Nepal’s Department of Foreign Employment or directly from the embassy in New Delhi. The notice emphasized that individuals failing to obtain these documents would not be allowed to travel abroad.
The embassy revealed that Indian authorities have flagged a significant surge in cases where Nepali citizens try to transit through Indian airports without proper employment clearances. Many of these individuals were found using counterfeit documents, resulting in their detention, interrogation, and even travel bans.
While the embassy had relaxed NOC requirements last year for Nepali migrant workers holding valid work permits and flying via Indian airports, this exemption does not apply universally. Specifically, travelers heading to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Iraq, Libya, and Lebanon must still secure an NOC unless they meet specific criteria.
Additionally, Nepalis travelling to Russia—except for those with Russian government scholarships or business visas—must also obtain a No Objection Certificate either from the embassy or from Nepal's Department of Consular Services.
This renewed alert comes against the backdrop of Nepal's ongoing economic distress and surging unemployment. According to *The Kathmandu Post*, more than 300,000 Nepalis migrated abroad in the past year, primarily to Gulf nations and Malaysia, in search of work.
The government emphasized that protecting the safety and legal rights of its citizens remains a priority and called on all Nepalis to follow official processes when seeking employment overseas.
