“Not People’s Verdict, But a Plot”: Mamata Refuses to Quit After Bengal Poll Shock

Kolkata, May 5: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has firmly rejected calls to step down following her party’s defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections, asserting that the results do not reflect the will of the people but are the outcome of a “conspiracy.”

Addressing a press conference after the shocking electoral setback, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief said there was “no question” of her resignation. She maintained that her party had not lost due to public rejection, but because of alleged manipulation and irregularities during the election process.

Banerjee further alleged that the contest was not a fair political battle against the Bharatiya Janata Party, but rather against the Election Commission of India, accusing the poll body of acting in favour of the ruling party at the Centre.

She also claimed that the mandate in several constituencies was “looted” and pointed to irregularities in the counting process, alleging that delays were deliberately created to demoralise her party workers. Calling the episode a “black chapter” in democratic history, Banerjee signalled that the TMC would explore further action and continue its political fight.

The remarks come after a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape, with the BJP securing a decisive majority and ending the TMC’s long-standing rule in West Bengal.

Despite the defeat, Banerjee struck a defiant tone, insisting that her party would “bounce back” and challenge the outcome both politically and legally, keeping the state’s political atmosphere charged in the days ahead.
