Odisha Farmer Guards Rare Rs 3 Lakh Per Kg Mango Tree as Market Worries Grow
New Delhi, May 29 : A farmer from Odisha’s Malkangiri district is in the spotlight after successfully growing the rare Japanese Miyazaki mango. This fruit is often seen as one of the most expensive mango varieties in the world.
Deba Padhiami, who lives in Tamasa village, nurtured the sapling for nearly four years before it finally produced fruit. The premium mango can reach prices of up to Rs 3 lakh per kilogram in international markets, thanks to its rarity, striking red look, and exceptionally sweet flavor.
However, this unexpected success has brought a new challenge. Instead of celebrating a profitable harvest, Padhiami is spending nights guarding the tree, worried that someone might steal the valuable fruit. He reportedly keeps watch over the orchard around the clock as interest in the rare mango continues to increase.
The farmer is also facing another obstacle — finding the right buyers. Unlike regular mangoes sold in local markets, Miyazaki mangoes need special packaging, transportation, and access to premium customers such as exporters, luxury retailers, and high-end hotels.
Padhiami is now seeking advice from agricultural experts and government authorities on pricing, marketing, and protecting the crop. While growing this prized fruit is a significant achievement, turning it into a profitable business may be an even greater challenge.
