PM Nepal : Those who died during protests will be recognized as martyrs
Kathmandu, Sep 15 : Nepal's newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki announced that individuals who died during the recent youth-led protests will be recognized as martyrs. The declaration, made during her first speech since taking office, also included a promise of financial and emotional support for the victims' families.
Karki, a former Chief Justice and Nepal's first female Prime Minister, expressed her sorrow over the loss of young lives. She stated that those who were killed in the demonstrations will be officially declared martyrs, and their families will receive a financial aid package of Rs 10 lakh. Additionally, she pledged assistance for those who were injured.
The Prime Minister's appointment follows a massive "Gen Z" protest movement that led to the resignation of the previous government. Karki emphasized that her administration's purpose is to stabilize the nation during this transitional period, not to hold on to power. She committed to a six-month term, after which she will hand over responsibility to a new parliament.
The protests, initially sparked by a social media ban, grew into a widespread movement against corruption, unemployment, and inequality. The clashes between demonstrators and police resulted in at least 51 deaths and more than 1,300 injuries. Karki praised the resilience of the protesters and acknowledged their core demands for economic equality and the elimination of corruption, while also promising to investigate any acts of vandalism.
Looking ahead, Karki's government faces the challenging task of restoring stability and preparing the country for new parliamentary elections scheduled for next year. Her administration must also address the economic issues that fueled the protests and work toward national unity. Karki is expected to finalize her cabinet soon to begin this crucial work.
