Pure Petrol Will Remain Available But at a Higher Price, Says Nitin Gadkari Amid E20 Fuel Debate

New Delhi, July 15: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has defended the Central Government's ethanol blending policy, stating that motorists who wish to continue using 100% pure petrol will still have that option, but it will come at a higher price.

Addressing the ongoing debate surrounding E20 petrol, Gadkari said consumers preferring conventional petrol without ethanol should be prepared to pay more, as the government's focus remains on expanding the use of ethanol-blended fuel across the country.

Responding to concerns about the continued availability of lower ethanol blends such as E10, the minister said it would not be practical to maintain separate supplies after India has successfully achieved 20% ethanol blending. He noted that E20 petrol is now widely available at fuel stations nationwide and has effectively become the standard fuel for the majority of vehicles.

Gadkari reiterated that the ethanol blending initiative is a key component of India's long-term energy strategy. According to him, the programme is designed to reduce the country's dependence on imported crude oil, lower fuel expenditure, create greater demand for ethanol produced by farmers, and reduce vehicle emissions.

He emphasised that the transition to ethanol-blended fuel will contribute to cleaner, more sustainable transportation while also strengthening India's energy security and supporting the agricultural sector.
